What Socrates Says About Change

August 24, 2022

“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”— (widely attributed to) Socrates

Change is inevitable. You can not go against the flow of time. You can try, but it will be very frustrating.

A lot of us are afraid of change because the unknown is scary. If things were constant, we would know what to expect, and it would be easier to avoid pain, loss, and failure. However, growth only comes with change. There’s no way around it.

Also, some changes come from things outside of our control, and that lack of control brings in more fear. When the unexpected happens, we move forward by changing what we can, accepting what we can’t, and moving on.

Your beliefs dictate your behavior. Focus on changing your beliefs through what you expose yourself to. Read books that help you reframe your thinking. I personally love Mindset by Carol Dweck. Constantly learning helps you feel more prepared, especially during times of uncertainty.

In this shifting market and turbulent times, instead of clinging to the past, embrace change. It is a chance to grow, experience new things, and learn. Be agile and adaptable, ready to pivot when the need arises. Explore new options. Don’t be afraid to try something because you are afraid to fail.

“The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.” —John C. Maxwell

The only way to navigate change is to accept that it is inevitable, but the way to succeed through change is to be excited and expectant of growth.
